(The items linked here are probably the lowest available price, but due to the quantity of data I've been digging through I cannot do exhaustive searches on everything so this is not currently certain.)
Please note that articles with * are items Adam has and can eventually long-term loan to the space.
Where possible, tools are emphasised over materials. The idea is to increase the range of our abilities, via either new avenues or extending capabilities of current equipment.
David has promised a resin kitlist, this will go into Essential Materials when available. It's not a blocking number as we should hopefully have flexibility regarding what materials we buy. He's also suggested a casting workshop at some point this year.
Budget category is for grant purposes, and automatic totalling. By the same token Cost is cleaned line cost eg 3 * goggles at '£3-5ish' == 3*4 == £12. For specifically costed items that only one are needed of, this is a duplicate of Price.
Options:
Woodworking T&E (fleshed out) Main Room T&E (costed, awaiting the Rapid wishlist from Steve) Maintenance and Improvement (glazing, shelving and carpeting costed. Roof and ventiliation needs quotes at some point.) Essential Materials (Wood, filament, resin, screws, solder, etc. Awaiting a Kitronic list from Jon, and input from all concerned parties about woodstock, paints and finishes.)
Some tools span room usage or purpose, eg calipers are used for more than woodwork, gloves all sorts, but until category numbers need adjusting I'm using which room it'll be stored in as the delimiter.
Please do not change table structure. Javascript automatically updates '£subtotal' fields based on cell position/indexes. Currently this script just runs for me but it will probably be global eventually. Heading +' Later' eg 'Woodworking T&E Later' is valid; it lets me keep things in the list that are for a later time/grant/too much for this one's budget/etc.
Item | Type | Budget Category | Description | Rationale / Notes | Price | Cost | URL |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Planer / Thicknesser | Woodworking Machine | Woodworking T&E | Machine for turning rough stock into joinable uniform planks | With a supply of pallets, this will provide us with as much lumber as we need for most purposes. Which machine is the best choice really depends how much budget we can throw at it... there are options either side, but cheaper you have very mixed reviews, or lose the planer / jointer capabilities. With this one we will need to buy or make a stand/trolley as well. | £346 | £346 | https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cpt1000-254mm-10-planer-thicknesser/ |

Table vice | Utility | Woodworking T&E | Flush vice for planing and general heavy duty holding | We currently have but one vice, which can cause queues and logistical blockages, especially as it's right next to the power tool bench. This particular model has a dog too, allowing large sheets to be clamped horizontally using the bench itself. | £53.99 | £53.99 | https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/52pd-175mm-wood-workers-vice/ |
Bench vice | Utility | Woodworking T&E Later | Mountable vice and small anvil for metalwork & friends | For holding workpieces for on-table operations. Angle gauge / inclinometer | Measuring | Woodworking T&E | Calipers for angles. | Dead handy for attaching to saw blades or tables (eg drill press, sander, bandsaw) to make sure that it actually really IS 90 / 45 degrees, not just 'roughly'. Much time and hair is saved. | £16.59 | £16.59 | https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tacklife-Protractor-Portable-Pocket-Size-Inclinometer/dp/B072KGHZY9/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1516207657&sr=8-4&keywords=digital+angle+gauge |
Depth gauge | Measuring | Woodworking T&E | Calipers for depth. | For making sure that the table saw or router really IS set for exactly X mm. Calipers with depth gauges aren't ideal for this as both the body and needle are too narrow; a gauge rides the highest points of the router bit / saw blade and spans the recess it emerges from. | £16.99 | £16.99 | https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trimmer-Router-Digital-Measuring-40141500/dp/B0713TZRP6/ref=sr_1_3?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1516207783&sr=1-3&keywords=digital+depth+gauge |

Assuming we have spare change in the grant, what house stock do we want to soak it up with? This is also useful as a bargaining tool so we can 'haggle down' if needed, by removing things that we didn't really need in the first place. It should all be justifiable, but some rationale relate more strongly to some aspects of 'revitalisation' than others.
- Filament; any in particular? Assuming 4 reels of https://shop.3dfilaprint.com/filaprint-dark-blue-premium-pla-175mm-3d-printer-filament-1277-p.asp or similar colours until someone weighs in. 1.75 and 2.85 are the same price (£20.95). Steve said some were missing - if I know which we can replace them? Spray paint is always useful eventually. A good ebony dye would be very nice. - Lumber; any specifics? Plywood, CLS, pine planks ? - Laser ply, mdf, acrylic and friends. I nominate Jon to hit up Kitronik. Basically what we usually order!
To research / add:
Passive air filtration. Bloody useful and it could be considered under a few grant budget headings as accountancy requires. http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-afs-500-air-filtration-system-310483 £304.25 - or one twice as effective for £90 more - http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-afs-1000b-air-filtration-system-310481 £394.04 Other options are certainly available. Filters and mounting gubbins will also be needed for whichever is chosen.
The workshop is currently using Steve's toolkit for hand tool supply. Eventually we should replace this with our own - a decently equipped toolbox is about £150-200.
The same applies for the hand power tools. Awaiting concrete information on what is actually owned versus lent.
Another / better soldering station? Presumably this is on the Rapid list.
A sewing machine has been suggested in the past. One could be rescued from freecycle mayhaps.
Screen printing equipment. Digital and/or oldschool? This is a beast I am unfamiliar with. Space is also a factor. A 'starter kit' seems to be about £60, but is mostly consumables. If someone with time and preferably interest could research this I'd appreciate it, I'm oversaturated with research as it is.
A dehumidifier might help in the workshop. Unsure though, given the scale of the problem...
A 'better' front door camera. Awaiting thoughts from Jon. We have potentially been offered a free replacement from Sir James, uncertain as to timeframe or quality though.
Long-term consumables may be worth investing in. In particular, paints, wood dyes and finishes spring to mind. On a related note, also paintbrushes.
The grinder is currently pretty useless. We could expand it with a range of wheels to allow cleaning, abrading, sharpening and polishing - we also need to fit a guard and mount the thing though, it likes to go for a walk and spit firey sparks about the place. https://www.machinemart.co.uk/c/grinding--polishing-wheels/?p=1&c=30&s=pricelowhigh
Resin paraphrenalia. Aside from a load of pots and mixers, we'd need scales, gloves, and sheet foam to make the moulds from. Long-term consumables here are things like dyes, mould release agents, of which only a small amount is used per cast. Also plaster of paris and a ton of bandages / rags / paper would be a sensible stock item. They're cheap and used for exomoulds and mean much less resin actually needs to be used per item. We would also need expendable paintbrushes here too.
Misc shared consumables; glues, tapes, screw, nails, nail gun refills, wire and so forth. Again not sure it's worth listing.
Simplify3D was suggested as a potential purchase a while ago, but my research so far suggests that slic3r Prusa edition is probably better, and of course, free. Simplify3D seem to be coasting on reputation and not actively developing or bugfixing. Citation: http://www.akeric.com/blog/?p=4164
Speaking of 3D printers, we currently have 4, of which only 2 (mostly) work. Fixing the current ones would provide an increased bandwidth for reasonable quality prints, so buying another average printer wouldn't benefit us that much. It may be worth investing in a machine that allows something otherwise new, eg a huge print bed, or multiple extruders.
Building infrastructure
For grants that are usable for construction materials. Need to measure roof area, carpet area, and rafter shelf length and height. Check for damp issues under there too...
The Workshop Roof
Remove the polystyrene and start again. Off of the top of my head, we need a damp membrane, insulation that isn't flammable (celotex, kingspan etc), and some plywood. This is not my area so I hesitate to commit numbers to paper based on guesswork, as they have a habit of becoming more permanent than anticipated. See previous requests for getting quotations/advice on this.
Area is 29.36m2 and 22.73m2 for the nonwindowed and windowed sides respectively. 'Celotex 50mm High Performance Insulation Board 1200 x 2400mm' is £13.19 per m2, giving £685.88. This does not include any calculations for board size, wastage etc - the number is meant to be a guide only. We also need supporting battens (ripped CLS?), some sort of damp handling membrane probably, and some cheap plywood to cover it. And of course someone to install it. My research is giving mixed noise about whether we need a breather membrane on the outside, a vapour control layer on the inside, or both. Breather membrane is £1.35 per m2; £71.55. Vapour barrier is £84.26. Plywood is £6.71 per m2; £355.63! Given how easy it is to whack and jab the roof while moving wood around, we likely do need the armour, although arguably we could get away with leaving the extremeties. Insulation full of holes is nobody's friend. No particular recommendation is given or implied for these products or insulation strategy!
Completely useless and entirely bodgespecced total for materials (not including battens); £1,197.32
We could however double glaze the window ourselves. 1700mm * 3600mm polycarbonate sheeting is £80.92, plus a bit of rip cut & damp treated CLS to frame it. Assume 2 CLS'; £5
The Under Rafter shelves
Ply, assume 18x1220x2440mm 5 * £34.99 ; £174.93 (a lot of flat surface to cover here) CLS, 3 * £2.50 ; £7.50 Casters, assume 8 bays * £4.29 pack 4 casters ; £34.32 Screws, 500 * 1; £4.99
£221.74
CLS: 45cm * 7 * 2; 6.3m / 2.4m = 3 beams; £7.50. If we need support under, 2 * 5.6 = 11.2 / 2.4m = 5 beams; +£12.50
Plywood: 80cm * 120cm * 6 = 2 sheets, 5.6m * 80cm = +3 sheets. Technically can do 2 sheets but the joints would be everywhere.
It might be worth giving each 'bay' a plastic or fabric curtain to stop dust getting back there, otherwise boxes and such will become dust traps. This may potentially affect air movement and thus damp issues though. Prices are from Wickes. Are we limiting this enterprise to one side only? Assuming so for now.
Carpet
https://www.diy.com/departments/colours-cornflower-carpet-tile/81105_BQ.prd for no particular reason other than cost and vaguely similar colour.
The uncarpeted area is 5.6M by 8.8M. Tiles are .5M so rounding up to 6 by 9; halftiles will mean we have some left over but a few spares are not a bad thing.
In total, £11.76 per square meter for 54 square meters ... £635.04 Can we just 3d print ourselves some carpet? It'll be cheaper. I suppose we don't need to do the whole area with one grant either, which is a handy way to fill 'spare change'.
An oven
I'm going to say £150 as a working figure; feel free to be more specific. https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/cooking/ovens/335_4215_31936_xx_xx/1_20/price-asc/100-400_xx_8_xx_5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-criteria.html
Update, Steve has an oven pending deployment, we're waiting on a gas plumbing quote.
Valuation left as it could be used for match funding costs.
Drop ceiling for the main area
Design & cost up. Very low priority for me given the other concerns, if someone feels differently then please have at it.
Overheads
They are our main outlay. In theory we should use grants that allow such use for as much of them as we can.
As to what percentage of them each allows and how it's worked out ... I suppose we need to know our normal monthly costs, and handle that case by case.
Things that would be very nice but we can probably build or bodge:
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-4-inch-cross-vice-ccv4c/ £47.98 , solid cross vice. Adam is currently brewing something out of scraps and dreams for the drill press but it won't be as sturdy!
https://www.screwfix.com/p/triton-tsps450-450w-oscillating-spindle-sander-240v/1417k £120 , Bobbin sander. Wonderful for anything non-flat, but we could in theory make our own.
The 'Magic Money Wand' Section
If the banking fairy rains upon us:
A lathe - can the floor support this? They are also bloody big.
Update: I've found a few small options, £200ish for wood, £600+ for metal. Do we really want a metalworking lathe? Cost aside, swarf is a bloody nightmare, and if someone starts knocking out AK47s then I for one do not wish the paperwork. For wood, this is likely the best candidate
Better bandsaw, with a deeper throat and more welly.
Soundproof the presentation area? I'm unsure if this is still on the cards or the plan was mothballed.
A serious 3d printer. Ideas are welcome!
